Kem is a Warsaw based queer feminist collective focused on choreography, performance and sound at the interface with social practice. Through experimental formats and community building, Kem engages in critical intimacy and queer pleasure.
Our projects are characterised by hybridity and fluidity, blurring the boundaries between art, curating, education, activism, clubbing and community-making practices. It is a community created in the process of collaboration and engagement with the politics of embodiment, feeling and subjectivity in relation to collectivity. Kem experiments with formats and strengthens queer, feminist and anti-racist artistic practices and discourses.
We have organised presentations of new performance and choreography, as well as raves, workshops, research and a shared artist studio. The events we organise bring together an overlap of scenes; from people interested in the visual arts, ravers, theatre and dance.
We started as a space in a former ammunition factory in the eastern Warsaw district called Praga and from the beginning it was an artist-run, hybrid space with a fierce experimental programme and DIY attitude.
It was initiated by Alex Baczyński-Jenkins and Marta Ziółek. Since then Kem changed into a collective that includes Alex Baczyński-Jenkins, Krzysztof Bagiński, Ania Miczko and Ola Knychalska. With the loss of the physical space in Podskarbińska at the end of 2017, Kem’s practice turned into programmed activities carried out outside a specific location, often at the invitation of cultural institutions.
